We recycle biodegradable plastic
Most biodegradable plastics today still end up burned or composted. Good intention, bad ending: the carbon goes straight back into the air. At Beyond Bioplastic, we turn that ending into a beginning.

What we do
We recycle biodegradable plastic waste using bacteria. Our Biokraker™ technology — developed at Wageningen University — lets mixed and dirty bioplastics break down into valuable, biobased chemicals (VFA’s). These can replace fossil ingredients, or even be used to make brand-new bioplastics.
This isn’t just recycling. It’s keeping carbon in the loop.

We turn bioplastic waste into carbon negative & sustainable chemicals

Why it matters
Bioplastics are booming, but their end-of-life is still a blind spot. Composters don’t want them. Recyclers can’t handle them. And when they’re burned or composted, they still turn into CO₂.
With our microbial recycling, bioplastic waste becomes a resource — not an emission.
Together we keep carbon in the loop — and take bioplastic beyond the bin.
Where we are now
Backed by the BiotechBooster program, we’re moving from lab to pilot scale, together with industry partners. We’re testing real waste streams, proving the technology, and building the foundation for the first demo plant.

Who’s behind it? Meet the team

Merel Witteman
Part designer, part environmental scientist, part relentless “this-must-be-possible” thinker. Merel bridges the world of creative concepts and hard science and makes complex stuff surprisingly clear (and fun). She drives the vision, builds partnerships, and makes sure the Biokraker™ doesn’t just work — but matters.

David Strik
Associate Professor in Environmental Technology at Wageningen University and the scientific driving force behind our microbial recycling process. David brings nearly two decades of experience in biotechnology, bioprocess design and scale-up. He developed the core principles of the Biokraker™ technology and ensures our scientific foundations stay solid while we move from lab to real-world applications.

Yob Woud
Connector, dealmaker, and the one who knows everyone in the recycling world. Yob turns opportunities into collaborations, brings industrial partners to the table, and keeps us grounded in what the market actually needs.
